
Reports indicate that violent confrontations between Wazalendo forces and AFC/m23 rebels have occurred along multiple front lines in the South Kivu province since Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Notably, these clashes have been observed in Cirunga within the Kabare territory, as well as in Nyangezi and Burhale located in the Walungu territory.
On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Cirunga chiefdom was awakened by gunfire from both heavy and light weaponry. Local civil society reports that all activities in this region of South Kivu have come to a standstill.
Witnesses from Cirunga indicate that fatalities have occurred on both sides, with residents claiming to have seen bodies lying on the ground. This alarming situation has incited widespread panic within the commune of Bagira, which borders the Cirunga chiefdom. Schools have sent students home, and numerous shops remain shuttered.
Furthermore, in Nyangezi, located in the Walungu territory, local civil society has reported a significant displacement of residents due to the clashes that began on Tuesday, June 17.
In Kalehe Ihusi, inhabitants have reported hearing gunfire and explosions since Tuesday night into Wednesday.
It is important to note that the city of Bukavu and several territories in South Kivu have been under the control of M23 rebels since last February.
