The security situation has remained concerning since the morning of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in several areas of the Kabare territory in South Kivu.
Initially, clashes erupted in the Cirunga and Bushwira groupings between the Wazalendo and the AFC/M23 troops, according to reports from civil society sources.
According to local civil society sources, gunfire began around 6 AM, causing panic among the population.
“The situation escalated: heavy and light gunfire erupted between the two warring parties. The clashes continued into Bushwira, where five individuals were shot at close range. In Kagabi (Cidjo), a young man was killed and disposed of in a toilet. Two other bodies were discovered, one in Cirunga and the other in Kakoma. Around 5 PM, two young men lost their lives in the village of Karambi, bringing the total number of bodies recovered in the Cirunga grouping to four. The number of injured is increasing by the hour. In total, nine people have died, and others are receiving treatment in various medical facilities in the area,” our source explains.
In the Walungu territory, however, a calm has been observed along different combat lines since Tuesday, June 24, 2025, following violent clashes reported in the villages of Muzinzi and other neighboring areas.
It is noteworthy that after the recent clashes in these territories, the AFC-M23 has bolstered its forces in the area, which has further instilled fear among the population. “This has once again led to a massive displacement of residents,” our sources conclude.
These clashes occur on the ground while peace processes, particularly those in Doha and Washington, remain promising. Already on June 27, a peace agreement facilitated by the United States of America has been reached.
