On Friday, June 6, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Armed Forces (FARDC), along with Wazalendo fighters, successfully reclaimed the pivotal hill of Nkobe located in the Kisimba group of Walikale territory, North Kivu province.
This development, as reported by local administrative sources, follows a series of intense confrontations with the AFC/M23 rebel group.
The government-aligned forces now hold the strategic heights overlooking the villages of Kalinga and Kisone, both of which have been liberated from rebel control. AFC/M23 fighters have retreated towards Ikobo and are reportedly bolstering their positions in Rusamambu and Bukumbirwa in anticipation of possible counterassaults.
Local officials are alerting the community to a potential encirclement strategy by the rebels aimed at the town of Pinga and are urging for the reinforcement of military personnel to counter this emerging threat.
These ongoing hostilities have resulted in the displacement of hundreds of civilians, who are currently facing dire living conditions, while the human cost of the recent conflicts remains uncertain.
