More than 1,500 civilians were killed in attacks attributed to ADF rebels in just one year following the June 12, 2024, massacres in Maykengu, a village in the Bapere sector in the northern part of Lubero territory (North Kivu). This is a tragic toll that local civil society is calculating.
The first ADF incursion in Maykengu, in the Bapakombe groupement, killed forty-three people, according to Fiston Kabunga, president of the Njiapanda-Mangurejipa civil society. Since then, the violence has extended to about 20 additional villages, resulting in significant material damage, multiple fatalities, and missing persons.
Over the course of a year, more than 1,500 people were killed, families were uprooted, and entire towns were stripped of their residents, according to Fiston Kabunga, who recalled that the hemorrhage had spread throughout the northern portion of Lubero territory.
An urgent request to the government of Congo
In order to restore security and stop the killings, civil society is urging the Congolese government to take swift, decisive action.
