On Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16, violent confrontations occurred between AFC/M23 rebels and members of the local armed group known as the Collective of Movements for Change (CMC) in the Bambo, Bukombo, and Tongo groups within the Bwito chiefdom of Rutshuru territory, North Kivu.
Local reports indicate that clashes between the CMC and the AFC/M23 persisted until late Tuesday night, especially in the villages of Rurere, Kavumu, and Birambizo.
The provisional death toll has reached at least seven, which includes the village chief Shonyi from Bukombo, along with four individuals injured, among them civilians. Furthermore, 18 homes were set ablaze in the village of Mushebere, as per the same reports. The violence has also triggered considerable population displacement: it is estimated that nearly 50% of the residents in these areas have sought refuge in locations considered safer.
Witnesses describe a pervasive atmosphere of fear throughout the region, as sporadic gunfire continues. The humanitarian needs are anticipated to be substantial for those displaced, who are currently without shelter or immediate support.
