In the provinces of North and South Kivu, 2,351 individuals injured by weapons received treatment in hospitals supported by the ICRC. Additionally, teams conducted nearly 7,000 surgical procedures to care for these weapon-wounded individuals. This information is detailed in the ICRC’s report for April and May 2025, which was reviewed by eyesoncongo.info on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
The ICRC highlights that the statistical data gathered raises serious concerns regarding the potential collapse of segments of the health system in the most vulnerable regions, which could have severe repercussions for millions, particularly affecting the health of mothers and children, the ill and injured, survivors of sexual violence, and even posing broader epidemiological threats.
In eastern DRC, specifically in North and South Kivu, five surgical teams have been dispatched to assist hospitals supported by the ICRC.
Three hospitals are receiving ongoing assistance, including the CBCA Ndosho Hospital in Goma, the General Referral Hospital (HGR) in Beni, and the Provincial General Referral Hospital in Bukavu, which treat patients injured by weapons, alongside the University Clinic of the University of Burkina Faso (UOB).
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expresses its worries about the decline of the health system noted in the provinces of North and South Kivu, a situation exacerbated by armed conflict and insecurity, economic challenges, and a significant decrease in funding for humanitarian efforts.
