On the morning of Monday, June 16, intense confrontations erupted between M23 rebels and members of the Collective of Movements for Change (CMC) on the hills of Bumbasha and Bunkuba, situated approximately 10 kilometers from Mwesso, within the Bukombo group of the Bwito chiefdom in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu.
Local reports indicate that explosions from both heavy and light weaponry were heard starting at 6 a.m. and persisted until 9 a.m. local time. These violent confrontations led to a significant exodus of people from nearby villages. Many residents sought refuge in Buhambira and Mwesso, located in the adjacent Masisi territory.
For several days, clashes have been raging between M23 rebels and several local armed groups, including Wazalendo fighters. Last week, fighting erupted in Katsiru, where a health center was hit by an explosive device, injuring several people and causing significant material damage, including to the water reservoir that supplies the local hospital.
